Baby Air Fryer Blooming Onions

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment:

  • Air fryer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Whisk
  • Small bowl
  • Spoon

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • Peel the onions and cut off the top (stem end), leaving the root end intact.
    • Place the onion cut-side down and make cuts downward, stopping about 1/2 inch from the root. Make 12-16 cuts around the onion, depending on its size, to create the “petals.” Be careful not to cut all the way through.
  2. Preheat the Air Fryer:
    • Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Prepare the Breading:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano.
    • In another mixing bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 1 cup of buttermilk.
  4. Bread the Onions:
    • Dip each onion into the flour mixture, making sure to get the flour into all the “petals.”
    • Shake off any excess flour.
    • Dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, ensuring it is well coated.
    • Finally, dip the onion back into the flour mixture for a second coating. Make sure the onion is fully coated.
  5. Air Fry the Onions:
    • Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket, cut-side up. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to do this in batches.
    • Spray the onions lightly with cooking spray.
    • Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, until the onions are golden brown and crispy.
  6. Prepare the Dipping Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of horseradish sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of paprika, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce.
    • Mix well and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve:
    • Carefully remove the blooming onions from the air fryer and transfer to a serving platter.
    • Serve immediately with the dipping sauce on the side.
